We prefer the tonal qualities and punch that brass offers on our instruments. That’s why the bridges on all Zon basses are precision machined from brass to our specifications before they are plated in chrome, black chrome, or gold.

Items you won’t readily see on our basses are the threaded screw inserts. Each of the pickups is secured to the body via a brass-threaded insert. These inserts provide the ability to raise and lower a pickup millions of times over the years (not that you’d want to) and prevent the screw from stripping or popping out. The inserts also allow us to mount the pickup securely to the body thus improving the tone quality of the bass. Our research has found that pickups rigidly mounted to the body actually result in a better overall tone. On several models, we also use threaded inserts to hold the back cover-plate screws. This ensures repeated use without stripping or tear-out.

The machine heads or tuners we use are the enclosed type, with a gear ratio of 20:1. It’s a fine tuning key that prevents sudden “jumps” in pitch when tuning, thus enabling the player to tune using fine increments up into the pitch, rather than above it and then back down to the desired pitch. The enclosed housing keeps dirt from getting between the gears while maintaining smooth, consistent tuning.
